Around the Campfire

Grilled ham and cheese is a dependable camp meal when dinner needs to be simple, warm, and familiar. It works for lunch, dinner, or a quick rainy-day meal under cover.

Why This Recipe Works

Medium heat gives the bread time to toast while the cheese melts and the ham warms through. Pressing lightly helps the sandwich hold together without squeezing the filling out.

Quick Facts

  • Serves: 4
  • Heat zone: Medium
  • Best for: Quick lunches, rainy nights, kid-friendly dinners
  • Teaches: Toasting and melting timing

Shopping List

  • Bread
  • Ham
  • Cheddar
  • Butter

Home Prep

Pack bread where it will not crush. Portion ham and cheese before the trip.

Cooler Packing

Keep ham and cheese cold. Keep bread dry and separate.

Equipment

  • Blackstone griddle
  • Spatula
  • Optional press or melting dome

Heat Zones

Use medium heat for the bread; move it to a cooler zone if the bread browns too fast.

Ingredients

  • 8 slices sandwich bread
  • 8 ounces sliced ham
  • 4 ounces sliced cheddar cheese
  • 3 tablespoons butter, softened

Instructions

  1. Preheat the griddle to medium.
  2. Butter the outside of each slice of bread with about 1 teaspoon of butter.
  3. Build 4 sandwiches by layering 2 ounces of ham and 1 ounce of cheddar cheese between 2 slices of bread, buttered side out.
  4. Place sandwiches on the griddle and toast until the first side is golden brown, about 3–4 minutes.
  5. Flip and cook until the cheese melts and the other side is golden, about 3–4 minutes more. Apply gentle pressure with a spatula if needed.
  6. Slice and serve warm.

Doneness

Sandwiches should be hot inside with melted cheese and toasted bread.

Common Mistakes

  • Cooking too hot.
  • Using too much filling.
  • Pressing too hard.

Serving Suggestions

Serve with chips, soup, fruit, salad, or pickles.

Variations

  • Use Swiss cheese.
  • Add mustard.
  • Add tomato after cooking.

Dietary Adaptations

  • Gluten-free: Use gluten-free bread.
  • Dairy-free: Use dairy-free cheese or skip cheese.
  • Vegetarian: Skip ham and add vegetables.

Scaling

Cook sandwiches in batches and hold finished ones on a cooler zone.

Weather Notes

This is a good covered-area meal when weather is damp.

Leftovers

Best fresh, but reheats gently on low heat.

Kid Helper Tasks

Kids can butter bread and layer cheese away from the griddle.

Dragonfly Tip

Medium heat beats high heat. Melted cheese matters more than dark bread.

Dragonfly Challenge

Try one with cheddar and one with Swiss. Pick the better camp melt.
