Around the Campfire

Camp muffuletta melts are a bold sandwich dinner for nights when plain grilled cheese is not enough. Salami, ham, provolone, and olive salad bring big flavor with very little cooking.

Why This Recipe Works

The Blackstone toasts the bread while the cheese melts and the filling warms. The olive salad stays inside the sandwich, but the layer should stay thin so the bread crisps.

Quick Facts

  • Serves: 4
  • Heat zone: Medium
  • Best for: Hot sandwich nights, make-ahead dinners, strong flavors
  • Teaches: Pressed sandwich timing

Shopping List

  • Italian bread
  • Salami
  • Ham
  • Provolone
  • Olive salad
  • Butter or oil

Home Prep

Slice bread and portion meats, cheese, and olive salad before the trip.

Cooler Packing

Keep meats, cheese, and olive salad cold. Keep bread dry and separate.

Equipment

  • Blackstone griddle
  • Spatula
  • Optional melting dome or press

Heat Zones

Use medium heat for the bread; move it to a cooler zone if the bread browns too fast.

Ingredients

  • 8 slices Italian bread (about 1/2-inch thick each)
  • 4 ounces sliced salami
  • 4 ounces sliced ham
  • 4 ounces sliced provolone cheese
  • 1/2 cup olive salad, well-drained
  • 2 tablespoons butter or oil

Instructions

  1. Preheat the griddle to medium.
  2. Spread butter or oil on one side of each bread slice.
  3. On the unbuttered side, layer 2 ounces salami, 2 ounces ham, 2 ounces provolone, and 2 tablespoons of olive salad per sandwich. Top with a second slice of bread, buttered side out.
  4. Place sandwiches on the griddle, buttered side down.
  5. Toast until the first side is crisp and golden, 3–4 minutes.
  6. Flip and cook until the cheese melts and the second side is golden, about 3–4 minutes more.
  7. Remove, slice, and serve warm.

Doneness

Sandwiches should be hot inside, crisp outside, and melted in the center.

Common Mistakes

  • Using too much olive salad.
  • Cooking over high heat.
  • Pressing so hard the filling slides out.

Serving Suggestions

Serve with chips, salad, fruit, or griddled vegetables.

Variations

  • Use turkey.
  • Add roasted peppers.
  • Make smaller slider melts.

Dietary Adaptations

  • Gluten-free: Use gluten-free bread.
  • Dairy-free: Skip provolone or use an alternative.

Scaling

Assemble sandwiches ahead and toast in batches.

Weather Notes

Wind slows melting. Use a cover if needed.

Leftovers

Best fresh, but can be reheated gently on low heat.

Kid Helper Tasks

Kids can layer cheese and help assemble sandwiches away from the griddle.

Dragonfly Tip

Thin olive salad makes a better melt than a heavy layer.

Dragonfly Challenge

Try one pressed and one unpressed. Pick the better campsite sandwich.
