Around the Campfire
Griddled chocolate-hazelnut banana sandwiches are a quick camp dessert that feels like a treat without needing a fire or baking setup. They are warm, sweet, and easy to cut into halves for sharing.
Why This Recipe Works
The Blackstone toasts the bread while the filling warms inside. Gentle heat keeps the bread from burning before the banana softens.

Home Prep
Pack bread where it will not crush. Keep bananas protected.
Cooler Packing
Spread usually does not need cooler space unless the label requires it. Keep butter cold.
Equipment

- Spatula
- Knife
Heat Zones
Use low to medium-low heat for the bread; move it to a cooler zone if the bread browns too fast.
Ingredients
- 8 slices sandwich bread
- 1/2 cup chocolate hazelnut spread (such as Nutella)
- 2 medium bananas, peeled and sliced
- 2 tablespoons butter, softened
Instructions
- Preheat the griddle on low to medium-low.
- Spread about 1 tablespoon chocolate hazelnut spread on one side of each bread slice.
- Top 4 of the bread slices with banana slices, distributing evenly.
- Place the remaining bread slices on top to form sandwiches, spread side down.
- Lightly butter the outside of each sandwich (about 1/2 tablespoon per sandwich).
- Place sandwiches on the griddle. Cook 3–4 minutes per side, or until the bread is golden and toasted and the filling is warmed through.
- Slice and serve warm.
Doneness
Bread should be lightly toasted and the filling warm.
Common Mistakes
- Cooking too hot.
- Overfilling.
- Pressing too hard and squeezing filling out.
Serving Suggestions
Serve as dessert, snack, or sweet breakfast side. Try with a dusting of cinnamon sugar or alongside fresh fruit.
Variations
- Add peanut butter.
- Add strawberries.
- Dust with cinnamon sugar.
Dietary Adaptations
- Gluten-free: Use gluten-free bread.
- Dairy-free: Use dairy-free spread and plant-based butter.
- Nut-free: Use a nut-free chocolate spread.
Scaling
Toast sandwiches in batches and cut into halves or quarters.
Weather Notes
Good when weather makes fire desserts harder.
Leftovers
Best fresh.
Kid Helper Tasks
Kids can add banana slices and help assemble sandwiches away from the griddle.
Dragonfly Tip
Thin filling works better than thick filling. You want toasted, not leaking.
Dragonfly Challenge
Try one with banana and one with strawberries. Pick the camp dessert winner.
