Around the Campfire

Camp churro bites are a warm, sweet campsite treat that does not need deep frying or a campfire. Small dough pieces make them easy to cook, coat, and share.

Why This Recipe Works

Small dough pieces cook more evenly on the Blackstone than full biscuits. Butter and cinnamon sugar go on after cooking so the coating stays clean and flavorful.

Quick Facts

  • Serves: 4
  • Heat zone: Low to medium-low
  • Best for: Quick desserts, kid treats, sweet breakfast sides
  • Teaches: Gentle dough cooking

Shopping List

  • Biscuit dough
  • Butter
  • Cinnamon sugar

Home Prep

Portion cinnamon sugar before the trip. Keep dough sealed until cooking.

Cooler Packing

Keep refrigerated dough cold.

Equipment

  • Blackstone griddle
  • Spatula
  • Bowl for coating

Heat Zones

Use low to medium-low heat. Gentle heat lets the centers cook before the outside over-browns.

Ingredients

  • 1 (16-ounce/453 g) tube refrigerated biscuit dough (8 large biscuits)
  • 1/4 cup (57 g) unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup (100 g) granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Preheat the griddle on low to medium-low.
  2. Cut the biscuit dough into small, bite-sized pieces (about 1-inch squares).
  3. Place dough pieces on the griddle and cook gently, turning as needed, for 8–12 minutes, until golden and cooked through.
  4. While the dough cooks, melt the butter in a small pan or microwave-safe bowl.
  5. In a second bowl, mix together the granulated sugar and cinnamon.
  6. Remove cooked dough pieces from the griddle and immediately toss in melted butter to coat.
  7. Roll buttered bites in the cinnamon sugar mixture until fully coated.
  8. Serve warm.

Doneness

Dough should be cooked through and no longer raw in the center.

Common Mistakes

  • Cooking too hot.
  • Making pieces too large.
  • Adding sugar on the griddle.

Serving Suggestions

Serve as dessert, snack, or sweet breakfast side. Try with chocolate sauce, caramel sauce, or apple topping at the table.

Variations

  • Serve with chocolate sauce.
  • Add powdered sugar.
  • Add apple topping.

Dietary Adaptations

Use dietary-specific dough if needed.

Scaling

Cook in batches and keep pieces small.

Weather Notes

Cool weather may require covering briefly to finish the centers.

Leftovers

Best fresh.

Kid Helper Tasks

Kids can toss cooked bites in cinnamon sugar after the hot work is done.

Dragonfly Tip

Sugar goes in the bowl, not on the griddle.

Dragonfly Challenge

Try one batch with cinnamon sugar and one with powdered sugar. Pick the camp favorite.
