Around the Campfire

Cinnamon French toast sticks are built for camp mornings with kids, coffee, and a little extra time. They are easy to dip, easy to share, and feel special without needing a complicated breakfast.

Why This Recipe Works

Cutting bread into sticks gives more crisp edges and makes the pieces easier to handle on the griddle. Medium-low heat lets the egg coating set before the outside gets too dark.

Quick Facts

  • Serves: 4
  • Heat zone: Medium-low
  • Best for: Kid breakfasts, sweet mornings, shareable plates
  • Teaches: Gentle egg-batter cooking

Shopping List

  • Thick bread
  • Eggs
  • Milk
  • Cinnamon sugar
  • Butter
  • Syrup

Home Prep

Cut bread into sticks before the trip if using early. Pack cinnamon sugar in a small container.

Cooler Packing

Keep eggs and milk cold. Keep bread dry.

Equipment

  • Blackstone griddle
  • Spatula
  • Shallow dish

Heat Zones

Use medium-low heat. Give the centers time to set before the outsides over-brown.

Ingredients

  • 8 slices thick bread (Texas toast or similar), cut into sticks
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 3 tablespoons cinnamon sugar
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, for cooking

Instructions

  1. Preheat the griddle to medium-low.
  2. Whisk 4 eggs and 1 cup milk together in a shallow dish.
  3. Dip each bread stick briefly into the egg mixture, turning to coat but not soak.
  4. Melt 3 tablespoons butter on the griddle.
  5. Place bread sticks on the griddle. Cook until golden brown on one side, about 2–3 minutes, then turn and repeat on all sides until browned and the egg coating is set.
  6. Toss or dust cooked sticks with 3 tablespoons cinnamon sugar while still warm.
  7. Serve immediately.

Doneness

Egg coating should be set and bread should be hot throughout.

Common Mistakes

  • Soaking bread too long.
  • Cooking too hot.
  • Cutting sticks too thin.

Serving Suggestions

Serve with syrup, fruit, bacon, sausage, yogurt, or coffee.

Variations

  • Add 1 teaspoon vanilla extract to the egg mixture.
  • Use cinnamon raisin bread for the sticks.
  • Serve with berry sauce instead of syrup.

Dietary Adaptations

  • Gluten-free: Use gluten-free bread.
  • Dairy-free: Use dairy-free milk and oil.
  • Vegetarian: As written.

Scaling

Cook in batches and hold finished sticks on a cooler zone.

Weather Notes

Cold mornings may require a longer preheat.

Leftovers

Reheat gently and serve as snack sticks.

Kid Helper Tasks

Kids can dust cinnamon sugar and set dipping cups away from the griddle.

Dragonfly Tip

Dip quickly. Bread sticks should be coated, not soaked.

Dragonfly Challenge

Try one batch with cinnamon sugar and one with powdered sugar. Pick the camp favorite.
