Cooking with Kids

Safe jobs by age, and why participation matters.

Some of the best camping memories happen while everyone's helping make the meal — and kids can help safely without ever touching the hot griddle.

Teach the boundary first. Before anything's cooking, show them the hot zone around the griddle and where it's safe to stand. A clear line lets a kid help with confidence instead of being shooed away.

Then hand out jobs by age:

  • Younger kids: wash produce, carry napkins, set the table, sprinkle cheese, build burgers, hand ingredients to the cook.
  • Older kids: mix batter, butter buns, read the recipe steps aloud, learn to use the thermometer.

The point isn't speed — it's that the kid who sprinkled the cheese is the one who brags about dinner. Participation builds confidence, and confidence is what turns cooking from a chore into part of the adventure.
